A Week in Dubrovnik Exploring old Dubrovnik and the Dalmatian Coast
The walled city of Dubrovnik has been called the most perfectly preserved mediaeval town in the world. Located on the shores of the warm Adriatic, it is a jumble of red-tiled roofs tucked tightly into the city walls, with a profusion of churches, monasteries and palaces. It is easy to imagine the hustle and bustle of the city streets during the Middle Ages and Renaissance when Dubrovnik’s power and influence rivalled that of Venice. Although the city is becoming a popular destination it is not too busy for much of the year. Dubrovnik is situated on the famous Dalmatian Coast, a unique coastline characterised by a profusion of islands, inlets and coves, stretching from Split down to the southern border with Montenegro. The water is said to be the clearest of the whole Mediterranean; a theory that can be tested on a ferry trip to the lovely island of Kolocep or during our visit to Cavtat, a small coastal town with a harbour area, some fine old buildings and a palm-fringed promenade. Mljet National Park is our destination for one day and we also venture inland to walk through peaceful countryside and typical villages seeing something of rural life. This is a relaxed trip with sightseeing on foot and some easy, undemanding and very scenic walks, allowing us to experience Dubrovnik and its surroundings, rather than just visit.

Hotel Sumratin is a medium-sized two-star hotel located on Lapad Bay about 3km from the old town, this can be covered by an easy bus ride or a 40 minute walk. Most of the hotels are in this area, which is also home to a large number of local people. The hotel is located in a pedestrian zone about 50m from the nearest beach. The area is not overdeveloped and the mix of local residents and visitors creates a pleasant atmosphere. All the hotel rooms have en-suite facilities. Departures in December stay at the 3-star Villa Rašica, a more expensive hotel a similar distance from the old town but perched on the hillside with great views of the coast.

Food:
Continental breakfasts are taken at the hotel. Lunches will be taken as picnics, or at local restaurants or cafes that are passed on the day's route: these are at extra expense. In the evenings 6 meals are taken at the hotel and on one night dinner is not included, giving the option of choosing one of the many restaurants in Dubrovnik, either within the city walls or closer to the hotel. Dubrovnik is famous for its seafood, prepared from the day's fresh catch. The other Croatian specialities are numerous lamb dishes both grilled and roasted. The influence of Italian cuisine is also evident with plenty of restaurants serving pizza and pasta. The wine from the region is also worth trying with some good reds and whites on offer.

Day 1
Depart London on a direct flight to Dubrovnik. Transfer by road to the hotel in Dubrovnik. Those booking land-only arrangements should meet the group at the hotel.
Day 2
A full day in the remarkable old city of Dubrovnik. We will spend the day with a local guide, in the morning seeing the most important sites, such as the Rector's Palace and both the Franciscan and the Dominican Monasteries. After time for a relaxed lunch, perhaps enjoying the cafe life of the main pedestrian street, La Placa, we discover more of the gems of the city by walking around the top of the city walls.
Day 3
A half-day trip walking from the village of Osojnik to visit Mociljska cave and a couple more villages with equally wonderful names. A restaurant lunch is possible before returning to Dubrovnik for some free time in the afternoon.
Day 4
A day for visiting Kolocep, one of the smaller of the Elafiti islands, the closest group of islands to Dubrovnik. The ferry ride to the island is a mini excursion in itself with views of Dubrovnik and the many other islands in the group. Once landed we explore the beaches and pine forests on foot.
Day 5
A free day with no guided excursions. Re-visit the old city or find a secluded beach along the coast.
Day 6
A full day visit to the lovely island of Mljet. For many people this is the finest island of the Adriatic, much of which is protected as a National Park. Lush and heavily forested, the island has few trappings of modern tourism. Inside the National Park are two beautiful lakes where we spend most of the day, as well as walking through the forests and to the peak of Montokuc for a panoramic view of this beautiful island.
Day 7
A morning walk lasting about two hours on the Ronald Brown pathway to the Strazisce Peak. The next stop is the coastal town of Cavtat where we can see the sights and relax on the beach.
Day 8
Transfer to Dubrovnik airport for the flight to London. Those with land-only arrangements end the trip in Dubrovnik.
