The most famous pilgrimage in Mediaeval Europe
Carrying an official pilgrim's passport, it is possible to retrace the steps of the many thousands of pilgrims who, since AD813, have made the long journey to Santiago de Compostela in the far north-west of Spain. This was the most important pilgrimage of the Middle Ages, and routes converged from all over Europe. Our journey begins in the foothills of the Pyrenees and passes through a variety of landscapes including pine woods, wine country, high passes and wide plains. As well as the scenery, there is a strong cultural and historical interest throughout the trip, with ghost villages, gothic and baroque architecture, and splendid towns providing diversions. A fascinating journey through hundreds of years of pilgrim history.
