Leaving the metropolis of Boston behind, we follow the winding coast of Maine through fishing villages from another era to New England's only National Park, Acadia, to settle in for our first night's camp. The next day is free to explore the quiet carriage paths of the park by bicycle, or hike Cadillac Mt. for a sweeping view of this majestic coastline, then take in a whale-watching cruise (mid-summer only).
Continuing along the coast through Saint John, Canada's oldest city, our next stop is New Brunswick's Fundy National Park. The world's largest tidal fluctuations occur here, offering outstanding beach combing and an intimate look at rock pool marine life. Whether you wander the along the beach or the trails atop the bluffs above, the seascape vistas are magnificent. Keep a watchful eye for the abundant wildlife as well.
From here we leave the North American mainland and onto Nova Scotia. Rising up from the seashore we head into the highlands of Cape Breton National Park. The sheer cliffs rising out of the sea and into these rugged mountains make these headlands especially impressive. Endless trails throughout the park offer hikes to the tops of rugged peaks with outstanding views and quiet walks to forested lakes in this unspoilt wilderness. If you prefer to explore by water, this remote coast also offers great sea kayaking opportunities. From the highlands of Cape Breton we head back to the sea. It's a short ferry boat ride across the Northumberland Strait to Prince Edward Island.
Primarily an agricultural region, the warm currents of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the red sandy beaches make this a popular summer retreat. Choose from activities such as canoeing, horseback riding, beach combing, or even wind-surfing during the day and complete the evening with the local delicacy, a fresh lobster dinner.
To appreciate some of this area's rich pioneering history, you can wander the waterfront in the historic Provincial Capital of Charlottetown, or visit the childhood home of the author of Anne of' Green Gables. Passing back through the rich farmlands and deep forests of New Brunswick, where the influence of the original French Acadian settlers and the Micmac Indians is still found, we head to Baxter State Park in Maine.
This untouched wilderness is the largest and most remote in the Eastern United States. Mt. Katahdin is the starting point for the 2200 mile-long Appalachian Trail that continues as far south as Georgia. Spend a day hiking along the many trails this park has to offer, or take some time to relax in this remote wilderness before returning to the big city life of Boston, where we complete this fabulous journey back from beautiful Maritime Canada.
