Known to her people as Druk Yul, the Land of the Thunder Dragon, Bhutan is perhaps the only country in the entire Himalayas to have emerged into the twenty-first century more or less culturally intact, and similarly in environmental terms, largely untouched by industrialisation or modernisation. Due to restrictions on visitor numbers - imposed by the Bhutanese King and his Buddhist government - few western travellers are able to witness this beautiful, and in many ways still medieval, hermit kingdom.
Those who do will invariably experience warm hospitality from a genuine and seemingly happy people, and will leave Bhutan with enduring memories of a visually stunning landscape and an enchanting way of life.
This extended and comprehensive journey takes the traveller deep into the country’s heart, visiting Bhutan’s most historic sites and magnificent locations, and includes a three-day trek which affords an even deeper insight into the country’s charming and traditional society. |
