Botswana is one of Southern Africa's least visited and yet most fascinating destinations. It has a wide variety of habitats, from deserts to wetlands and some of the finest game-viewing in Africa. For many years it has concentrated on high quality facilities, limiting the number of visitors annually to ensure that its reserves and parks are not damaged or saturated by mass tourism.
This tour visits 3 different camps, all small and intimate to give you a proper safari experience, and traditional in their design and services. Their close proximity to the wildlife and remoteness from civilization makes this tour an experience of a lifetime. |
Day 1 | Depart London for Johannesberg. | Day 2 | Arrive Johannesberg in time to connect to your flight to Maun in Botswana. On arrival you will be met by a representative of Mack Air Charter Company who will transfer you by light aircraft to Kaparota Camp. | Day 3 | First full day of activities. Kaparota Camp is located in the eastern portion of the Vumbura concession. This vast private reserve lies within the Okavango Delta, immediately north of Mombo and the Moremi Game Reserve. Kaparota is a traditional tented safari camp offering a superb all round Okavango experience with all the advantages of a private reserve. Game-viewing on the Vumbura concession can be exceptionally good, especially during the dry winter months when elephants and other herbivores return from the mopane forests to the floodplains and fringes of the Okavango Delta. The concession is home to numerous lion prides, while the open plains make great cheetah habitat, and leopard can also be seen. Packs of the rare and endangered African painted wolf move through the area periodically, and another highlight of the concession is the high concentration of majestic sable antelope. In addition to the excellent game-viewing, Kaparota Camp, which is located on a permanent channel of the Delta, also offers a good water experience. Mekoro rides depart from right in front of camp, and guests have the possibility of seeing hippo, crocodile, red lechwe and all the Delta's aquatic wildlife. The same diversity is also to be found in the region's birds, and birders will enjoy the combination of all the Okavango water 'specials' and woodland species. | Day 4 | Second day of safari. The Vumbura concession is an exciting example of the way eco-tourism in southern Africa is evolving. The camps came about as a result of a partnership between the rural community to the north of the concession (under whose management this prime piece of wilderness was placed by the Botswana government), and the world-renowned wildlife film makers Dereck and Beverly Joubert (who are famous as having producers of some of the National Geographic Society's most highly rated wildlife films).
The villagers formed the "Okavango Community Trust", and entered into a partnership with the Joubert's and with Wilderness Safaris, Botswana's leading camp operator; the community is now directly benefiting from substantial cash and auxiliary returns, jobs, skills transfer, and training. As a result, their disposition towards wildlife has changed significantly, and they have become some of the most ardent protectors of game and wilderness in Botswana. Many people today believe that it is only through such direct eco-tourism benefits to adjacent communities that Africa's wildlife has any hope of survival, and Vumbura Camp is at the cutting edge of this development. | Day 5 | At a pre-arranged time you will be road transferred to the airstrip for your air charter to Selinda, situated on the banks of the eastern Selinda spillway overlooking open floodplains and palm islands. Game drives take place at dawn, afternoon and evening in seven seater open-sided, 4x4 vehicles with qualified professional guides. Roam the open flood plains of the Selinda Reserve, both on and off-road searching out the big game, sometimes stopping for short walks or a more detailed inspection of things.
The Selinda area is well known for its hippo-killing lions, cheetah, wild dog and if you’re lucky, a leopard on your night drive. Good sightings of plains game such as giraffe, wildebeest, impala, lechwe, tsessebe, kudu and elephant are common, plus the added excitement of night predators like hyena, jackal, bat-eared fox and small cats. Game viewing by boat on the Zibalianja lagoon is available depending on the current water level at the time. Bird watching is excellent and many owls can be spotted on the night drives. | Day 6 | Your second day of activities at Selinda. | Day 7 | In the morning you will be transferred to Zibalianja Camp, located near the Zibalianja Lagoon on a palm tree island overlooking open floodplains, an immense sea of blonde savannah grassland. | Day 8 | Full day of safari activities. | Day 9 | At a pre-arranged time you will be road transferred to the airstrip for your air charter to Maun. From Maun you fly to Johannesberg in time to connect with your overnight floght back to the UK. | Day 10 | Arrive UK. |
