Cuba for the active traveller - explore this beautiful Caribbean island on foot
Cuba is a country on the verge of change as Fidel Castro reaches the age at which other world leaders are long into their retirement. Whilst the country has embraced tourism as the main route out of its current economic difficulties, away from the busy tourist areas is a wealth of rural charm to be explored, and this is best done on foot. We visit the heritage sites of Old Havana and Trinidad, and we gain an appreciation of the revolutionary history by visiting Santiago de Cuba – where the first shots of the revolution were fired. We also hike to Fidel’s jungle hideout following his return from Mexico, and Santa Clara where Che Guevara led the final armed action of the revolution, culminating in the overthrow of the dictator Batista. Our walking days take us up into three of the most mountainous areas of Cuba, most of which are jungle covered. Look out for humming birds and listen for the distinctive sound of the Tocororo, the Cuban national bird. We climb Turquino, at 1974m the highest peak on the island, and walk through the beautiful Topes de Collantes National Park in the Sierra de Escambray.
