Leaving "The Big Apple" behind, head south on America's busiest highway, the New Jersey Turnpike - first stop Philadelphia. Visit Independence Hall, site of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Liberty Bell. On to the nation's capital, Washington D.C., where the Lincoln, Jefferson and Roosevelt Memorials and the towering Washington Monument are brightly illuminated, giving them a special, haunting quality during your night tour of the city. The Holocaust, Air and Space, National Gallery of Art and other museums await the curious.
We leave the city, visiting the site of the Civil War's first major battle, Manassas on the way to the Shenandoah Mountains and on through Virginia to the green hills of Tennessee. Next we visit Nashville, home of the Grand Ole Opry, before travelling to Memphis for a chance to visit Elvis Presley's home, Graceland That evening, sample southern cooking while listening to live music in one of the many blues clubs on Beale Street.
New Orleans, what a place! Culturally diverse, architecturally beautiful, a jazz lover's paradise and a gourmet's dream come true. Take an historical walking tour through the French Quarter's narrow, busy streets or a steamboat ride on the mighty Mississippi. The optional guided swamp tour gives a unique opportunity to view the wildlife of the swamps surrounding this great city.
Head west to San Antonio, Texas, passing over the swamps of Louisiana on the USA's longest elevated highway. See the famous Alamo Mission, defended so gallantly by Davy Crockett and his Tennessee Volunteers in their fight for independence. In the evening, stroll along the picturesque River Walk.
Leaving Texas behind, stop at Carlsbad Caverns, the world's largest underground National Park for a self- guided tour of this subterranean world. At night, witness the unique "bat flight", where thousands of bats exit the cave on their nightly search for food.
Head next to the oldest capital city in the USA, Santa Fe, for a two night stop exploring this city's rich historical, cultural, and architectural past.
Then on to Monument Valley, a truly breathtaking area full of incredible red rock formations, buttes and mesas and part of the Navajo Indian tribal lands. Take an optional tour of the valley in a jeep or on horseback. Grand Canyon's beautiful vastness will leave you breathless and inspired. For the hard-core hiker, take a trip into the canyon or, for anyone who just wants to soak up this amazing natural wonder, there is a variety of more sedate hikes. See the I-MAX movie or take a scenic helicopter or plane flight.
Next stop is Zion National Park, which offers numerous spectacular hiking trails from the depths of the Narrows to the peak of Angel's Landing. Take a drive over the Hoover Dam to the fun filled city that never sleeps - Las Vegas. From our hotel close to the famous 'Strip', you can ride a limo, try your luck in the many casinos, play in Wet 'N Wild water park or, for the brave, bungee jumping.
Across the Californian desert to Los Angeles, where we tour Hollywood and Beverly Hills before we end our great adventure.
