Three great Moorish cities, white villages, mountains and the quiet Costa de la Luz.
Behind the tourist buzz of the Costas is a Spain which few get to know unless they wander off the beaten track for a day or two. Andalucia is a land of pretty white villages, fabulous cities and undiscovered National Parks. This area was once the heart of the empire of the Moors, whose influence still pervades Andalucian life at every level, most spectacularly in the old cities of Granada, Cordoba and Seville, which are amongst the most magical in Europe. You will visit the amazing Palace of the Alhambra, the awesome Mesquita and the Alcazar in Seville, but there's plenty of time to wander through the narrow streets and to sample the famous nightlife, food and flamenco dancing. However there are other quieter, more rural sides to the country, which we discover in western Andalucia, in the mountains near Ronda, and its famous white villages. We reach the stunning cliff-top town by train, before heading south to the Alcornocales Natural Park, to discover this remote and forested, but extremely attractive region. Finishing at a fine hotel in the white village of Vejer, we have two days to explore the quiet Atlantic shores of the Costa de la Luz, far nicer than anything on the Med. Is this trip for you?Travelling mostly on the excellent system of trains and public buses, this trip is divided between cities, villages and scenery; optional day walks and plenty of free time. |
Day 1 | Fly to Seville. | Day 2 | Morning walking tour of lively Seville, including Alcazar Fortress and the magnificent cathedral and Giralda Tower. | Day 3 | Free in Seville for carriage rides, exploration of old Jewish quarter, museums, Marie Luisa Park, etc. | Day 4 | Morning train to historic Cordoba; orientation walk. Free afternoon with optional visit to Alcazaba gardens. | Day 5 | Visit the incredible Mezquita, the cathedral within a mosque. Free afternoon for exploring old Jewish quarter. | Day 6 | Early bus ride to Granada. Orientation walk and afternoon visit to Alhambra and Generalife gardens until sunset. | Day 7 | Full day in Granada for exploration of Albaicin or re-visits to the Alhambra. | Day 8 | Excursion to Güejar Sierra in the foothills of Sierra Nevada with a valley walk and views of Spain's highest mountain, Mulhacen. | Day 9 | Board regional train for fascinating journey through rolling countryside towards the famous cliff-top town of Ronda. Afternoon exploring Ronda; continue on train to remote village of Colmenar. | Day 10 | Explore unqiue Alcornocales Natural Park - huge area of oak forest and river valleys with plenty of wildlife. Return to rural hotel at Colmenar. | Day 11 | Walk up Vultures canyon, plus chance for a swim. Re-join the train in the afternoon travelling south to Algeciras where we take a bus to the white village of Vejer. | Day 12 | Explore Vejer de la Frontera, 'whitest' of the white villages. Walk along coast through Las Breñas N. P. to Nelson's Cape Trafalgar. | Day 13 | Transfer to Tarifa or Algeciras for optional whale-watching, day trip to Morocco or day at the beach. | Day 14 | Transfer to Seville; fly London. |

Where we are unable to guarantee single accommodation you may be able to arrange and pay for it locally. If you are a smoker we ask you not to smoke in your room or tent if sharing.
