DOMINICA IN A NUTSHELL
Relatively undeveloped, mountainous Dominica boasts one of the Caribbean's most spectacular natural environments and is ideally suited to nature lovers and Caribbean aficionados who want to experience the less tame side of the region and a touch of ecoadventure. It's known as the ‘Nature Island of the Caribbean’ with good reason. The proud local population will give you a genuinely warm welcome and help you make the most of your time on their island home whether it's spent whale-watching, snorkelling, scuba-diving, bird-watching, hiking or kayaking. If your idea of nightlife is to watch the stars in the sky, then Dominica is the island for you.
CARIBTOURS' PERSONAL VIEW
Sarah stayed there recently and comments: "Dominica is the most lush island I have ever visited – the density of rainforest in the centre of the island is utterly overwhelming and yet, for somewhere so unspoiled, it also felt very comfortable with such warm hospitality."
This welcoming hotel lies within the walls of an original 18th century fort on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Caribbean – just a short walk from the island’s capital of Roseau.
It is a simple and informal hotel with no beach and no pretensions about being a luxurious resort; however, with the addition of the spacious oceanfront rooms at the edge of the sea, Fort Young is undoubtedly Dominica’s leading hotel and an excellent base from which to explore this truly beautiful island.
We find the staff at Fort Young to be especially charming and the food is excellent.
LOCATION
A two-minute walk to the centre of Roseau, the capital.
Dominica has two airports with excellent air access from Barbados, St Lucia, Antigua and other neighbouring islands.
