An adventurous trek into the remote territory of northern Vietnam, colonial Hanoi and the magnificent Halong Bay
This itinerary takes us into the isolated and largely unexplored region of Sapa in north-west Vietnam. Home to a number of fascinating hill tribes whose origins can be traced to southern China and Burma, it is a country of forested hills, secluded villages and high peaks which has had little contact with the modern world. The ethnic groups in Vietnam have been steadily assimilated into the general population but here in Sapa the traditional lifestyles are still widely practised and on this trip we have the chance to see a way of life little changed by the modern world. We visit and stay with many different groups whose unique costumes identify them with specific tribes, including Hmong, Thay, Red Dzao and Xa Pho. Our route along traditional hilltribe trails will take us through rice fields, jungles, rivers and rugged mountains to reach primitive villages seldom visited by outsiders. There is time to relax after the trek, exploring Hanoi, whose centre reflects its French colonial past, and sailing through the maze of limestone outcrops that make Halong Bay a natural wonder of the East.
