Inca trail and the Amazon rainforest Exploration of Peru's Amazon rainforest and the high-altitude world of the Incas
The jungles and mountains of South America provided refuge to many civilisations, whose ancient cities and sites are still being discovered. The most famous of the indigenous peoples were the Incas, a remarkable master-race whose greatest city, Machu Picchu, stunningly situated between the Peruvian Andes and the Amazon, was rediscovered only in 1911. Our three-part itinerary includes the Inca Trail, a high-altitude walk in wonderful Andean scenery, and - in complete contrast - an expedition deep in the jungles of the Amazonian Rainforest. Finally, there is the high altiplano, which runs through the south of Peru, and is a landscape of harsh, dramatic beauty. Once up on the plateau at around 3000m, the world of the Incas again unfolds before us. Even though there are cities, roads and a railway, everyday life of the altiplano still goes on much as it has done for hundreds of years. Motor cruisers may be replacing totoro reed canoes, but a cruise across the bright blue waters of Lake Titicaca to the island of Amanti still offers some of the most stunning scenery in the Andes.

On some trips it is not possible to guarantee single accommodation for the whole tour; where this is the case further information and prices can be found in the Trip Notes. If you would like a single room or tent on a particular holiday you should contact the office for details. Where we are unable to guarantee single accommodation you may be able to arrange and pay for it locally. If you are a smoker we ask you not to smoke in your room or tent if sharing. Please note on certain trips single accommodation is not available due to local operational conditions.
