An exciting journey to the southern region of Morocco with a glimpse of the mountains, desert and coast. This trip is full of activities that both parents and children can enjoy - horse carriage rides, exploring old Kasbahs, hiking around mountain Berber villages as well as donkey and camel rides. We discover the hospitality of the mountain Berber people with an overnight stay in a village in the Anti Atlas mountains and marvel at great kasbahs in Ait Ben Haddou and Taroudant. Our trip ends at the old Portuguese fishing port of Essaouira where we can explore the winding alleys, relax on the beach and sample the fresh seafood. |
Day 1 | MARRAKECH Arrive and check in to your hotel. No meals.
| Day 2 | MARRAKECH Morning guided tour of historical sights of Marrakech in a caleche (horse and buggy). In the afternoon we explore the souqs (bazaars) on foot. Later we'll have the chance to experience the hustle and bustle of the great square - Djemaa al Fna - which becomes the centre of activity at night with food stalls and entertainers galore. (B)
| Day 3 | MARRAKECH - AIT BEN HADDOU Journey across the Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass. We visit the Glaoui Kasbah of Telouet before continuing to the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, where we stay for two nights in a hotel with a pool. (BD)
| Day 4 | AIT BEN HADDOU - OUARZAZATE Ait Ben Haddou has been popular as a setting for many films such as Gladiator, Jesus of Nazareth and Lawrence of Arabia. This morning we explore this old village and its many Kasbahs. Later we head into the desert city of Ouarzazate. We'll make a visit to the film studios and have time to explore the town, its local markets and Kasbah Taorirt, one of the largest Kasbahs of its time. Return to Ait Ben Haddou for the night. (BD)
| Day 5 | AIT BEN HADDOU - TAMLAKOUTE We drive to the village of Tamlakoute, situated in the Anti Atlas Mountains, where we have the opportunity to meet the local Berber people and to catch a glimpse of mountain village life. We make an easy hike in the area around the village. Overnight in a village gite (simple guesthouse with dormitory-style accommodation). (BLD)
| Day 6 | TAMLAKOUTE - TAROUDANT Drive to Taroudant, an ancient red-walled city. We'll explore the old Kasbah and visit the leather tanneries, still working the way they have for centuries. Overnight in a hotel with pool. (B)
| Day 7 | TIOUTE In the morning we make an excursion to the nearby village of Tioute, where we take a donkey ride through the palmery and explore this small oasis in the mountains. We'll then take lunch at the house of the local Sheikh. Return to Taroudant for the night. (BL)
| Day 8 | TAROUDANT - ESSAOUIRA Journey to the Atlantic Coast and head for Essaouira. We spend the afternoon exploring this fascinating whitewashed town with its many wood workshops, working fishing port and beach. (B)
| Day 9 | ESSAOUIRA Morning camel ride along the beach to discover the old 'castle in the sand'. The afternoon is free to relax. (B)
| Day 10 | ESSAOUIRA - MARRAKECH Return to Marrakech where there is time for any last minute shopping. (B)
| Day 11 | MARRAKECH Tour ends. (B)
