Luxury Botswana

A Private Luxury safari to 3 diverse habitats, including the Okavango Delta
Ref: BT01
9 days from £3895 (minimum 2 passengers)
Destination: Botswana

< Go Back
Luxury Botswana Botswana is one of Southern Africa's least visited and yet most fascinating destinations. It has a wide variety of habitats, from desert to wetlands and some of the finest game-viewing in Africa. For many years it has concentrated on high quality facilities, limiting the number of visitors annually to ensure that its reserves and parks are not damaged or saturated by mass tourism.

A result of this can be seen in the facilities available, some of the most luxurious and exclusive lodges and camps in the world. This trip takes you to 3 of these, each beautifully located and offering the best facilities, and yet each in completely different landscapes and offering different type of game-viewing. From the large elephant herds of the plains, to the wetland of the world-famous Okavango Delta you will get to experience some of the worlds best game-viewing while staying at some of the worlds best camps. The luxury tents you stay in have the facilities of the best hotels and yet offer the true safari experience of the African night. Transfers between camps are by light aircraft, saving days of bumpy transfers and the food is superb.

If you like the best, then this itinerary is for you and can, if desired, be extended to finish at the world-famous Victoria Falls.

Realworld has a selection of other itineraries in Botswana, starting from £1,895. Please contact us for details.

Day 1
Depart the UK in the evening.
Day 2
After a non-stop flight to Johannesburg, you connect to your flight to Maun. Upon arrival you will be met and transferred by light aircraft to your first luxury camp, the Duma Tau.
The Linyanti Reserve, on which Duma Tau is located, is an enormous private concession, comprising nearly 300,000 acres of prime wilderness area in the far north-east of Botswana. It is bordered to the north by the Linyanti River, and to the east by the Chobe National Park, and contains two thirds of the length of the mysterious Savuti Channel. Apart from its sheer size, the most remarkable feature of the Linyanti Reserve is the diverse range of habitats that it encompasses. The Linyanti River is bordered by floodplains very similar to those of the Okavango Delta, as well as extensive grasslands, while the interior of the concession consists of vast mopane forests and acacia bushveld. This diversity of habitat in turn supports a wide array of wildlife, and this area is particularly well known for its huge herds of elephants (probably the largest herds in Africa), and the lions of the savuti channel (featured in National Geographic documentaries).
Day 3
Activities at Duma Tau focus on the wildlife of the area, with day and night game drives offering fabulous opportunities to view, firsthand and at close range, Africa's whole spectrum of diurnal and nocturnal creatures. With the exception of rhinos, virtually all other species of African animals are represented in good numbers on the reserve. Nature walks allow for closer inspection of some of the smaller aspects of the eco-system, while the camp's pontoon facilitates access to the Linyanti River, and a different perspective on animals as they come to the river to drink.
Guests are also offered the opportunity to wait at hides, from where they can view and photograph animals at close range without disturbance. All activities are led by professional guides and/or trackers, who are carefully chosen for their knowledge and experience of the bush, and receive extensive training to ensure that your encounters with the African wilderness are exciting, informative, and safe.
Day 4
In the morning you will be transferred by light aircraft to your second camp, Chitabe. Chitabe ( pronounced Chitaabee) is bordered by the Moremi Game Reserve to the north and east and offers guests "classical Okavango" scenery. The concessions boundary in the east is the Gomoti Channel and the Santantadibe River in the west. The area is made up of a superb variety of habitats which include permanent waterways and marshlands, dry acacia and mopane woodland, riverine areas, grasslands and seasonal flood plains.
Day 5
Chitabe offers guests game drives in open 4x4 vehicles both during the day and night, as well as walks. The camps owners are well known in the Okavango to Wilderness Safaris' guests who have stayed at Mombo. They are Dave Hamman and Helene Heldring, co-authors of the critically acclaimed book entitled "Running Wild - Dispelling the Myths of the African Wild Dog." A portion of the accommodation charges from each guest will go towards a Wild Dog Conservation Fund which Chitabe has established. Dr. J.W. ("Tico") McNutt began the Botswana Wild Dog Research Project in 1989. A study area approximately 3,000 sq. km. was established which includes an average of 160 dogs in 10 - 12 packs. Chitabe lies within this study area. Botswana's Wild Dog population represents a significant portion of all Wild Dogs remaining in Africa.
Day 6
In the morning you will be transferred by light aircraft to your third and final camp. Jao Camp is situated in a private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, west of Mombo, on a densely wooded oval shaped island overlooking the vast flood plains. Jao can offer both land and water activities, depending on the fluctuating levels of the Okavango's floodwater. The area is noted for its predators, and is said to have to have Botswana's highest concentration of Lion! The area is comprised of a superb variety of habitats, which include permanent waterways and lagoons, open flood plains and thick Kalahari soils.
Day 7
Jao offers an excellent all round Okavango experience, with game drives, mokoro excursions, short guided walks and boating available. Being outside the Moremi Game Reserve, night drives are permitted, which allows guests to view the nocturnally active animals in the area. A variety of habitats ensures diverse and interesting game viewing. Lion and Leopard are plentiful and Tsessebe, Lechwe and Wildebeest dot the flood plains. The wildlife at Jao depends largely on the water levels in the area. The lagoons are home to Hippo and Crocodile and the areas of permanent water attract large numbers of waterfowl.
Day 8
You will be transferred to Maun Airport for your onward flight to Johannesburg. Here you will connect with your overnight, non-stop flight home to the UK.
Day 9
Arrive UK

Duma TauDuma Tau
Duma Tau is a great camp set on one of Botswana's most extensive and game-rich private concessions. It enjoys a fabulous location, offering the best of both the dry Savuti Channel, and the wetlands surrounding the Linyanti River, while the camp itself provides all the comforts and features that anyone could ask for combined with the adventure of a tented camp experience.
The concession to the Linyanti Reserve belongs to a leading southern Africa conservation figure, and the reserve is managed by Wilderness Safaris, one of the most ecologically-minded camp operators in southern Africa. Although hunting is technically permitted on the concession, the owner and managers have waived their rights to allow hunting on the Reserve, thereby foregoing around US$300,000 in annual revenues so that the animals have the best possible opportunity to prosper, and guests have the best possible game-viewing experience. Staff are also involved in game counts and censuses to monitor the conservation efforts on the reserve.
Duma Tau camp itself is built under a shady grove of mangosteen trees, overlooking a large hippo-filled lagoon within the Linyanti waterway system. Its eight large, luxuriously appointed rooms are raised off the ground on polished wooden decks. They are set under thatch with canvas walls, allowing guests to enjoy the night sounds of Africa from the comfort of their beds. The bathroom facilities are en-suite, and each room also features an outside shower. There is a dining room, living room, bar area and plunge pool, also raised on wooden decks, with fabulous views.
