Lycian discoverer A week of gentle walks discovering the stunning coast of Lycia and the foothills of the Taurus Mountains
The Turquoise Coast – the south-western corner of Turkey – is simply incomparable. The combination of a magnificent coastline of dramatic cliffs and sandy beaches, dotted with pretty villages and numberless historic sites, and surrounded by the deep turquoise-blue of the sea, cannot be matched anywhere else in the Mediterranean. Much of the coast is only accessible on foot or by boat, and provides some outstanding walking. The climate is favourable for most of the year, the people are renowned for their hospitality, the food is excellent, and our accommodation is unique – next to the deserted village of Kaya, which was abandoned by its Greek population in the aftermath of the First World War. The empty houses and churches are a poignant reminder of the region's turbulent history. Kaya is 15 km south of Fethiye, and the beautiful lagoon, beach and village of Olü Deniz are nearby and on the route of one of our daywalks.

Day 1
We depart London Gatwick on the flight to Dalaman. Transfer to our base at Kaya Koyu, a journey of one hour. Those with land-only arrangements meet at the hotel in the evening of day 1.
Day 2
Fethiye Market Day. We start the day with a scenic walk with panoramic views over Fethiye, once called Telmessos. On the way we visit the Hellenic amphitheatre and some rock tombs cut directly into the cliffs, the most famous of these being the "Tomb of Amyntas". After lunch in a local lokanta (good value Turkish café/restaurant serving delicious local meals) we visit the vast and colourful market where we find a huge array of local crafts and produce. In the late afternoon you can treat yourself to a hamam (Turkish bath), or, for those who do not wish to be pummelled, the beautiful harbour with many cafés and bars is an ideal place for watching the world go by. We have dinner in one of the many restaurants in Fethiye before heading back to Kaya Koyu.
Day 3
Kaya Koyu to Olü Deniz. Today we start with a tour of the abandoned village of Kaya, Levissi in Greek. This was a major settlement during the Greek period, but now it’s a striking deserted village with a network of paths which wind between the houses and churches. We also take a scenic walk along coastal paths (with wonderful sea views) leading through pine forest to the beach and Olü Deniz. Here we can swim and sunbathe or even paraglide from the 2000 metre mountains which surround the beach.
Day 4
Free day to relax by the pool or go on optional walks. The leader will advise you about all the different options and activities.
Day 5
Pinara and Saklikent. With an early start we head across the Xanthos valley to the site of Pinara. Set on a steep hillside, this was an important city in the Lycian Federation, and is surrounded by cliffs honeycombed with rock tombs. After sightseeing we head towards to the Taurus Mountains and Saklikent Gorge, one of Turkey's most dramatic natural phenomena. For lunch we can eat the local speciality, fresh trout from the river. In the afternoon, depending on the water levels, we walk up to 6 km into the gorge.
Day 6
Village life. After a walk of around 2 hours we arrive at a small village where we see first-hand how self-sufficient the rural families of Turkey are, growing crops and vegetables, rearing animals and making fresh yoghurt and cheese from goats milk. We will see the local women preparing our lunch which may consist of delicacies like Gozleme (cheese, herb or meat filled pancakes), stuffed vine leaves or peppers which we shall eat in the traditional manner sitting on the floor around a low table. We spend the remainder of the day walking another route back to Kaya.
Day 7
12 Islands Boat Cruise. From Fethiye harbour we head out to sea for the beautiful 12 island cruise. It is a full day trip and provides the perfect way to see this stunning coastline. During the winter departures Dec, Feb and April: we replace the 12 island boat trip with an equally attractive cruise down the river at Dalyan to visit Caunos and the beach.
Day 8
Transfer to Dalaman for the return flight to London. Those with land-only arrangements will leave at Kaya.
