New England Country Walk As we leave New York City behind, you will soon discover a different New York as you pass through the Taconic and Catskill Mountain ranges before entering the state of Massachusetts where Mount Greylock, the highest point in the Berkshire Mountains and the famous Appalachian Trail awaits.
On your first night, your leaders will provide you with the hiking options for the first few days. Relax as you stroll along the wooded paths of the Berkshires that once inspired the famous American authors, Melville and Hawthorne. From here, we drive north into the foothills of the Green Mountains where we set up camp and relax around the evening campfire, topping off a relaxing first day.
"The Greens", as local hikers sometime refer to this small mountain range, are perfect for short walks in the wooded valleys or, if you prefer a challenge, take on the summits of Killington Peak or Bread Loaf Mountain on Vermont's famed Long Trail.
Travel from one of the most well-known segments of the Appalachian Trail, to the most pristine. Baxter State Park is home to Mt. Katahdin, the starting point of this 2200 mile-long, Appalachian Trail. Wander and enjoy the largest and most remote wilderness in the eastern United States. Here you can truly "get away from it all" on footpaths that wind through undisturbed forest and along the crystal-clear lakes and streams of northern Maine.
Keep both eyes and ears open for the chance of meeting some of the wildlife that abounds here. This tranquil wilderness is virtually untouched since the days of the first settlers, over three hundred years ago. As you pause to reflect in the solitude of this beautiful place, it is quite impossible to imagine that two-thirds of America's population lives within a day's drive.
You have now walked back to the beginning of America's national trail. It seems only fitting to top off the adventure with a walk on the trail where America itself began, Boston. Here you can readjust to civilisation again with a night out on the town and a chance to sample New England seafood at its finest. We are sure that you will enjoy a full day to urban 'hike' through the historic centre of old Boston on the Freedom Trail. Then it is back to the Big Apple to complete this unique walking tour.
Footloose Tip: September departures should be booked early to ensure a reservation, due to their popularity during the spectacular changing of the Autumn colours in New England.
