The combination of heart-stopping descents and some heart-thumping climbs following old shepherds' roads, challenging single-track and twisting forestry trails, are what makes these dramatic mountains such an exciting and challenging region for mountain bikers. The trails sweep through high meadows and lush beech and pine forests. There is plenty of single-track to test experienced mountain bikers and the opportunity to cram in an entire day of downhilling using the cable car up to Superbagnères- although anyone wishing to conquer this Tour de France climb on two wheels is free to do so! The free day gives a chance to try out one of the many other activities available, including tandem paragliding (not on a bicycle!)
Trip Profile:
A trip with a definite single-track and downhill bias. A typical climb each day 300-600m (mostly on vehicle-width tracks), a typical descent 1000-1200m (up to 4000m+ possible). Most days include a transfer to the start, but rides are unsupported. Rides become harder as the week progresses, though most technical sections are optional. Good variety of riding surfaces. Good level of fitness and off-road experience required - a good trip for intermediate mountain bikers. 5 guided rides, average 40km/day, 95% off-road.
