Sabah and Langkawi For centuries Malaysia has been a meeting place for merchants and travellers: Indian and Chinese traders came in search of gold; Cambodian, Sumatran and Javanese empires at different times have encompassed the Peninsula; and Europeans, most notably the British, have ruled there. Rich in culture and natural resources Malaysia offers a wide range of holiday experiences, from Peninsular Malaysia on the mainland, to Sabah and Sarawak on the island once known as Borneo. "Sabah" literally means "land below the wind", and it was so named because it is supposedly out of reach of the typhoons which sweep the Philippines to the north. It is a land rich in resources and traditional cultures. This East Malaysian State occupies the northern tip of the island once known as Borneo and the people here have an entirely different heritage to that of the Orang Asli on the mainland: their roots stretch back some 40,000 years to the earliest homo sapiens to inhabit Borneo. To the north of Penang lie 103 sparsely populated islands, with nothing to offer but deserted beaches, coves rich in coral and marine life, fishing kampungs and exotic birds and butterflies. Langkawi is perfect for a quiet relaxing end to your holiday. Not many sights to be seen but some of the scenery, particularly in the north, is spectacular.
