Sharm el Sheikh lies at the southern tip of Egypt's Sinai peninsular, overlooking the exquisite crystal-clear blue waters of the Red Sea.
A world-renowned diving and watersports centre, Sharm is also a popular choice for beach holidays, the perfect add-on to a city break or Nile cruise. A wide range of leisure activities, from horse-riding and jeep safaris, to quad bike and camel rides, is also available for the active.
The majority of hotels are around Naama Bay, a lively, international resort with many bars, restaurants and nightclubs, but the little town of Sharm el Sheikh itself, 7km south of the tourist centre, is well worth an evening visit for a taste of real Egypt with its spice shops, shisha cafes and sugar cane juice stalls.
Sharm also provides a good base from which to explore Sinai mountains and desert, beaches and stunning coastline with easy access to St Catherine's Monastery, the Coloured Canyon and a number of beautiful national parks.
The Sonesta Beach Resort is in our opinion a large, pleasant, comfortable resort featuring traditional Islamic décor, cool white paintwork and intricate wood panelling and shutters, with beautiful brass lamps and chandeliers. There's a secluded, private beach area when you can get a foot massage, and a children's club with playground and babysitting service make this hotel a good choice for families.
Location: At the north end of Naama Bay, a 15-minute walk to the tourist centre along the beautiful promenade.Rooms: 393. TV, minibar, hairdryer, airconditioning, safe, private terrace or balcony.
