Stay in the luxurious Sonesta St George in Luxor on the banks of the River Nile
Built on the site of Ancient Thebes 676km south of Cairo on the banks of the Nile, Luxor has been called the world’s greatest outdoor museum, and it is here that you will find many of Egypt’s most impressive temples and tombs. No trip to Luxor, the country’s tourist capital, is complete without a visit to the West Bank of the city, site of the fascinating tombs of the Valley of the Kings, including Tutankhamen’s, and the Valley of the Queens,with Nefertari’s marvellously decorated final resting place. Other architectural riches included Queen Hatshepsut’s Mortuary Temple and the giant statues known as the Colossi of Memnon.
On the East Bank, there’s the awesome Karnak Temple, its site large enough to hold ten cathedrals, and Luxor Temple, still yielding new treasures, including some exquisite statues unearthed in 1989 and now in Luxor Museum.
After sightseeing, you’re entitled to relax a while so why not; hire a felucca, the traditional Egyptian sailing boat, for an idyllic trip on the great River Nile; take to the skies for a spectacular dawn hot air balloon flight; try a donkey or camel ride; jump into a caleche for a city tour by horse and carriage; or just relax by the hotel swimming pool.
In the evening, watch the Sound and Light Show at Karnak Temple, walk along the Corniche, the long road that winds beside the river where you’ll find Nile cruise boats, great and small, or simply shop for souvenirs in the mesmerising souks and bazaars, perhaps stopping off at one of the many fine hotels for a drink and a belly dancer show. The Sonesta St George is one of Luxor’s newest hotels, built in 1997 on the banks of the Nile next to the main shopping area and offering every comfort you’d expect of a top-class hotel. It is only minutes from Luxor Temple and Luxor Museum. There are 224 rooms all with TV, air-conditioning, safe, minibar, hairdryer, private balcony or terrace. The hotel offers plenty of restaurants and bars with the Serapis (main), Miyako (Japanese), Nobles English lounge, Beban (Italian coffee shop), Jeb’s poolside restaurant and in the pool a swim-up bar.
