The Alpine High Route

A Classic High Level Route walk from Chamonix to Zermatt
Ref: EX-TWH
15 days from £0 (minimum 1 passengers)
Destination: France  Switzerland

< Go Back
The Alpine High Route The Haute Route is one of Europe's best known long distance touring routes for both skiers and walkers; running roughly parallel to the ski route is a spectacular and demanding summer trek from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn. The route covers approximately 100km and travels west to east, across 7 Alpine passes linking the valleys of Haute Savoie in France to the Swiss Valais. We pass beneath ten of the twelve highest mountains in the Alps; Mont Blanc, Grand Combin, Dente Blanche, Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn to name just a few of those over 4000 metres. Some of the terrain between the high passes is rugged and remote, scattered with glacial lakes and moraine. However there are also pleasant low-altitude walks, through green valleys and flower-strewn meadows. Several nights are spent in high alpine huts and village inns where we can savour the peaceful mountain atmosphere; the rest of the trip is vehicle-supported camping.

Group Size: min. 8, max. 16, plus leader.

Trip Profile:
10 days walking with vehicle support (4 days light backpacking); altitude maximum 2965m., average 1525m. Grade C- Strenuous. You need to be very fit and preferably with some experience of trekking. You will be walking up to 8 hours a day..

Accommodation:
Camping, mostly in good campsites with hot showers, occasional rough camps; some mountain huts, 1 village inn (dormitory style).

Meals:
All breakfasts, 10 picnic lunches and 14 dinners included.

Flights
The prices include flights from a UK airport to the destination airport and back, UK departure tax, all necessary domestic flights on the trip itinerary and all airport transfers. If you do not need our group flights, please ask for the “land only” prices. If you book at the “land only” price, international flights and related airport transfers are not included, but domestic flights generally are, except where tickets for these have to be issued in conjunction with your international ticket.

Accommodation
This is included in the price. If you’re camping, we provide sturdy two-person tents and all necessary communal camping and cooking gear, so you will just need to bring a sleeping bag and, on most trips, a sleeping mat.

Single rooms or tents
Our prices are based on twin share accommodation. If you book your own (many people do), we arrange for you to share with a person of the same sex. We do not charge a single supplement except on extensions. Where it is operationally possible to do so, we offer an optional single supplement in the price list. On some trips it is not possible to do so, we offer an optional single supplement in the price list. On some trips it is not possible to guarantee single accommodation for the whole tour; where this is the case further information and prices can be found in the Trip Notes. If you would like a single room or tent on a particular holiday you should contact the office for details. Where we are unable to guarantee single accommodation you may be able to arrange and pay for it locally. If you are a smoker we ask you not to smoke in your room or tent if sharing. Please note on certain trips single accommodation is not available due to local operational conditions.

Meal plans vary according to area and circumstances: for every trip, details of what is included are shown in the Food section of each trip, and in the Trip Notes.

Transport
All necessary transport during the trip is included, whether private or public.
