The Austrian Tyrol Walking from the Tannheimertal; a beautiful corner of the Austrian Tyrol
Amongst the mountains of the northern Tyrol and close to the German border is the Tannheimertal, known in the region as 'Das Schonste Hochtal Europas - The most beautiful high valley in Europe'. The wide, green valley floor gives way to meadows, high pastures and the partially forested mountains topped by the jagged summits of the Allgauer Alps. Our Pension is about 600 metres from the centre of Tannheim village on a minor road leading along a beautiful valley to Vilsalpsee, the lowest and largest of the three lakes in the valley. Winding and twisting through the area is a network of footpaths and tracks many of which are accessible on easy to moderate walks. Dotted around the mountains and in the hamlets and villages are Alpine club huts, cafes, restaurants and bars all providing welcome refreshment including some wicked cakes and strudels. The local community preserves many of the old traditions - the high pastures are still farmed, prize-winning cheeses are made in the mountains, and traditional dress is often worn.

Extend your stay:

Accommodation:
The Pension Am Muhlacker is owned and run by our hosts Marlis and Wolfgang who provide warm family hospitality. They take great pride in their home and in the service they provide. The Pension is on the edge of the village on a road that is quiet at night but is busy with walkers and cyclists during the day. Across the road from the pension are open meadows and paths that lead up into the mountains. The village centre is a five-minute walk away, where there are a number of shops, restaurants, banks, ATM etc. There are twin/double rooms and a few for use as single rooms; all are en-suite. Twin rooms comprise of an Austrian style twin bed, which is one large bed frame with two separate single mattresses, and two single sheets and quilts. The guest room is used for breakfast and can be used throughout the day. There is an honesty bar selling beer, wine and soft drinks. The garden is a great place to sit and relax.

Food:
At Pension Am Muhlacker you can be sure of a tasty feast each morning for breakfast. A home cooked dish is served in addition to the bread, cheese, cold meat and preserves that are the norm in Austria. Evening meals are taken in a couple of local restaurants that are full of Tyrolean charm and with enough traditional fare to satisfy even the heartiest of appetites. Lunches are not included but filled rolls can be purchased from the pension and the local shops are not far away. On some days it is possible to buy lunch at a mountain hut, café or restaurant.

Day 1
Fly from London to Munich. Transfer to the Pension Am Muhlacker in approx. 2 ½ hrs. Those with land-only arrangements meet at the pension in Tannheim.
Day 2
Five guided daywalks and one free day are scheduled for the week. Selection of the route to be taken each day is left to the discretion of the leader who takes into account ground conditions and weather forecasts. A chair lift can take us to the mountaintop at Neunerkopfle, from where a delightful ridge walk leads first to Landsberger Hut, down past an isolated mountain lake (Traualpsee) and on to Vilsalpsee for refreshment and the choice of a bus ride or a scenic walk through the trees back to the Pension. A second high-level route involves taking the chair lift to Fussener Jochle and traversing to the mountain hut below the jagged Aggenstein peak. Just as enjoyable are the lower-level routes, passing through the villages of Tannheimertal and crossing the lower slopes of mountains such as Krinnenspitze or Einstein. The average day will include less than 400m of ascent, one day may be more but is taken at a steady pace. The walks last for between 4 and 6 hours and take in a wide variety of scenery and paths. All are on recognised marked paths, many lead to panoramic viewpoints whilst other routes lead through woods and villages and all are of course cunningly designed to make good use of the mountain huts and cafes passed on route. A chair lift allows the enjoyment of the extensive sweeping views from the higher paths without too much effort and on the shorter walks there is time for a long lazy lunch. One day is left free for you to relax at the Pension, row on Vilsalpsee, hire a bike to ride the local tracks or take an excursion. The obvious day trip is to head into Bavaria to visit the truly amazing castles of Ludwig II, Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau and Linderhof.
