Stay in the elegant 5 star Old Cataract Hotel on the banks of the Rive Nile in Aswan.
Larger but much quieter than Luxor, Aswan is Egypt’s southernmost city and one of her most beautiful, sitting alongside some of the best stretches of the Nile - wide, green and sprinkled with pretty islands, with high desert hills topped with the Aga Khan’s Mausoleum as a dramatic backdrop. The city is not too large to walk around, and there’s plenty to occupy sightseers, from the intriguing Unfinished Obelisk and granite quarries, to the ultra-romantic Philae Temple set on a flower-filled island. Modern attractions include Aswan Dam and the amazing High Dam, completed in 1971, with Lake Nasser, the world’s largest man-made lake behind it, and the new Nubian Museum. Abu Simbel, Egypt’s finest temples, can be easily reached by air or coach from Aswan. More leisurely pursuits include relaxing on a felucca ride around Elephantine Island, strolling around the tranquil Botanical Gardens on Kitchener’s Island, or simply watching the magnificent sunset while sipping a cocktail on a hotel terrace or from the Corniche, the avenue that runs parallel to the Nile. And don’t miss a visit to Aswan’s famous market street, Sharia as-Souq, where you can buy exotic spices, fine alabaster and a wealth of other great souvenirs to take home.
Old Cataract Hotel is without doubt one of the most elegant hotels in Egypt, beautifully furnished throughout, with dark wood panelling, rich red velvet furniture, select Oriental and Victorian antiques and artefacts, and an air of discreet luxury. Opened in 1899, the legendary Old Cataract Hotel, where Agatha Christie famously wrote Death On The Nile in the suite still named after her, sits in gorgeous gardens on an outcrop of pink granite in south Aswan, just a few minutes from the centre, with fantastic views over the Nile and surrounding desert hills. There are 131 rooms on three floors all with TV, air-conditioning, minibar, some with balcony or terrace, all bath/shower.
The hotel has all the facilities you need with the renowned 1902 restaurant, Old Cataract Bar and Terrace; Elephantine Terrace Bar, and of course King Fouad’s Corner specially built for its fine views of the sunset over the Nile. There is also plenty of entertainment with oriental music on the terrace during sunset. For the more active there is a large swimming pool shared with New Cataract, a private marina on the Nile, a tennis court and table tennis.
