The south-western coast of Turkey is often reckoned to be the finest of all the Mediterranean coastlines. Here, the mountains of
the hinterland come right down to the sea forming a profusion of bays, inlets and islands of extraordinary natural beauty. Trapped in between are areas of fertile plain that support a rich agriculture, aided by the excellent climate. The waters here are clear and deeply coloured, giving rise to the name ‘The Turquoise Coast'. On the flanks of the mountains are beautiful areas of cedar and
Mediterranean oak forest, and, further inland, sparkling freshwater lakes.
However, it is not just the natural beauty that attracts us here; historically this area has always been important through its proximity to the centres of classical civilisation. Small independent civilisations flourished here as far back as the second millennium BC, and all the main empires of history came, conquered, declined, and left their inevitable mark on the landscape. In consequence, in this relatively small area, we can see many romantic and evocative remains of Man's earlier times - some well-restored and much-visited, others overgrown and almost forgotten.
The trip spends the week in Kas (pronounced cash), a small and charming town set in a deep bay and against a steep hillside. There are plenty of summer visitors, but Kas is generally not frequented by mass tourism, as the town has no beach. It is however an excellent base for walks, visits and water-based activities, and has a very relaxed atmosphere, with waterside restaurants and some pretty back streets to explore.
A relaxing but active break on the southern coast of Turkey. There is something to suit all tastes here: stunning walks; impressive historical sites; excellent food; long, sandy beaches and the option of a boat-trip, sea-kayaking or even scuba diving. The walking is gentle although some of the paths are a little rocky. All the activities are optional so you can spend the day wandering round the town if you’d rather. Most days involve some driving as well as some walking, but no transfer is over one and a half hours.
The real beauty of the Turquoise Coast is that the weather is good all year round, each season offering something different for the visitor, and the itinerary remains flexible to make the most of the different seasons. For example, in the heat of the summer we can gain altitude, by heading further inland, and avoid the heat. In the spring and autumn, more of the walks will be coastal. |
Day 1 | Fly to Kas. | Day 2 | Daywalk. | Day 3 | Daywalk along the coast or optional full day sea-kayaking exploring the sunken city of Kekova (in the winter we will travel by boat). | Day 4 | Daywalk. | Day 5 | Cultural excursion to Arycanda; afternoon walk down to mountain village of Yazir. | Day 6 | Daywalk. | Day 7 | Free day to relax, go diving or explore the surrounding area either on foot or by gulet (all optional). | Day 8 | Fly to London. |
