A week of walking and sightseeing on the Sorrentino Peninsula. Pompeii, Vesuvius and stunning coastal scenery
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful coastlines in Europe, with a long tradition as one of the premier tourist destinations in Italy. There's the great city of Naples, beautiful countryside, Roman sites and of course, stretches of spectacular coast. The best of the coastal scenery is on the southern side of the Sorrento Peninsula around the popular resorts of Positano, Praiano and Amalfi, but away from the sea the country is virtually undiscovered by the average tourist. There is a great contrast between the main resorts and the pace and style of life up on the Agerola plain. The resorts are quite busy but should not be missed as all retain much of their original character with narrow streets, whitewashed buildings and fascinating churches, monasteries and cathedrals. From the sea, the hills rise steeply up to the Agerola plain, reached only by a tangle of winding roads and ancient pathways that discourage less adventurous travellers. Our base is the small, typically Italian town of Bomerano, with its restaurants, shops and bars. We combine walking on mule tracks and old paths down to the coast with a visit to the coastal towns and a day exploring the incredible Roman remains of Pompeii and Vesuvius, the volcano that engulfed and preserved Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD.

Accommodation:
La Pensione Due Torri is a small, friendly, family owned and run hotel located 600m from the village square. Offering comfortable accommodation and warm hospitality, our hosts will go out of their way to ensure we enjoy our stay and are proud of their good service. The hotel has its own restaurant, rooms are spacious and some have balconies (allocated to the first clients to book). Twin, double and single rooms are available, all with en-suite facilities. The hotel is in a quiet residential street but not far from restaurants and the cafes/bars around the town square.
Food:
The hotel prides itself on the range of local specialities served in the restaurant. Evening meals are traditional Italian fare with a first course of antipasto followed by pasta, a main course and dessert. Three evening meals are taken in local restaurants, offering the chance to sample more of the specialities of the region and, of course, some local wine. The food in the region is dominated by traditions and flavours from Naples; freshly baked pizza, pasta with rich tomato sauces and locally produced mozzarella. These ‘staples’ are combined with an excellent variety of seafood, fresh vegetables and some exceptionally good pastries, such as sfogliatelle, to provide the wonderful taste of Southern Italy. Vegetarian choices are always available. All breakfasts are taken at the hotel. Typically breakfast is continental style, with various extras. Packed lunches consist of bread, cheese/cold meat/tinned fish, and fresh fruit.

Day 1 | We depart London Gatwick for the flight to Naples. On arrival we drive to our base at Bomerano, a journey of one to two hours, depending on traffic. Those with land-only arrangements should join us in the evening at La Pensione ‘Due Torri’. | Day 2 | There is the potential for a busy week but you can join the leader and group as often or as little as you wish. On two days the leader will arrange sightseeing trips (on foot), one to Vesuvius and Pompeii and one to the coastal town of Atrani and the famous hilltop village of Ravello for great views of the coast. There is also time to learn all about the local liquor ‘Limoncello’.
On three days of guided walking we follow some of the ancient pathways across the peninsula or down to the coast. Some stretches are rough underfoot, being no more than mule tracks, others are paved and sometimes the only way to enter a village is down a long series of steep steps (you may wish to bring walking poles or sticks). The walking offers superb views of the Amalfi Peninsula, taking us through hillside villages, lemon groves, and stunning gorges and along coastal tracks. All walks are between four and six hours with additional time for stops, lunch, etc. Please note that some paths are not suitable for severe vertigo sufferers. At least two finish at one of the famous costal resorts where there will be time for sightseeing, a drink or maybe a swim before returning to the hotel. On the one free day it is possible to take a boat trip to the beautiful island of Capri (when the ferry is operating); spend a day in Naples to see the sights and experience the Neapolitan passion for food and life; see more Roman remains at Herculaneum; or just relax at the hotel. The order of activities is left flexible so that the leader can adjust the programme to best suit weather conditions, opening times, etc.
