Destination: China

Treasures of China This comprehensive tour takes in all the main sites of one of the worlds most unique and fascinating cultures. From the bustle of modern Shang-hai, to the history and tradition of Xian , beautiful Guilin and Beijing. You will travel in style staying at 4* hotels.

Shanghai is China's home-grown modern city reaching for the sky across the Huangpu River from the famous Bund, where Western architecture remains as a reminder of a Colonial past. Today, just like Hong Kong, this is a bustling, fashionable commercial centre with trendy restaurants and bars; and at its heart a traditional Chinese city where martial arts are practised in the morning light and market traders ply their wares in narrow streets.
Visit Xian and its world-famous army of terracotta soldiers, stunningly beautiful Guilin and Beijing, with the opportunity to see the forbidden City and one of the worlds most famous land-marks, the Great Wall.

If you want to visit the Yangtze River on a cruise there is also a 5 day extension possible - please ask for details.

Day 1
Depart Heathrow on scheduled Air China flight to Beijing.
Day 2
Arrive Beijing and transfer to the 4* Marco Polo Hotel. Check-in for 3 nights on a bed & breakfast basis. The capital of the People's Republic of China is a sprawling metropolis, fast developing into a modern city, with wide boulevards and high rise buildings. It is home to many famous landmarks, and is the ideal place to explore China's ancient history. Spend the afternoon at leisure exploring the city.
Day 3
Take a tour to the heart of Beijing, the Forbidden City (World Heritage). It was constructed in 1406, and for 500 years it was home to the Ming and Qing Emperors. Today, visitors can roam around the network of palaces, pavilions and courtyards. To the south of the Forbidden City is Tiananmen Square. Wander around its vast expanse and see Chairman Mao's portrait looking across the square to his Mausoleum at the other end. Continue to the Temple of Heaven Park (World Heritage) and see the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, a beautiful cylindrical structure entirely made from wood. Lunch included.
Day 4
No trip to Beijing is complete without a drive out to the legendary Great Wall of China. Your private tour takes you to the Mutianyu section, 2 hours out of the city. The views from the top are magnificent and the Wall winds as far as the eye can see. Stop en route at the Ming Tombs and walk along the Sacred Way where stone carved animals and mystical creatures guard the entrance to the Tombs of 13 Ming Emperors. Lunch included.
Day 5
Fly to the ancient city of Xian, once at the very centre of Imperial China. Transfer to the 4* Bell Tower Hotel. Check-in for 2 nights on a bed & breakfast basis. Rest of day at leisure.
Day 6
Visit the incredible Terracotta Warrior Museum on a private tour and marvel at this amazing archaeological treasure. There are three halls at the museum, but it is the first hall which is the most awe inspiring: up to six thousand warriors, life-size and individual, positioned in formal military layout guarding the tomb of Emperor Qin Shihuang, the first Emperor of unified China. Buried for 2000 years, they have, inevitably, been damaged but archaeologists are in the process of painstakingly re-constructing the warriors. Lunch included.
Day 7
Enjoy a city tour including the South Gate of the City Wall, for a birds-eye view of the city, and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Fly to Guilin. Transfer to the 4* Park Hotel. Check-in for 2 nights on a bed & breakfast basis. Rest of day at leisure.
Day 8
Cruise on the Li River past some spectacular scenery: limestone karst peaks, covered in lush greenery, literally rise up from the ground and dominate every scene you pass. It is said that the scenery was created by the gods and you can see how the remarkable landscape has inspired so many artists and poets through the ages. Lunch included.
Day 9
See more of the sights of Guilin including the extraordinary underground scenery at Reed Flute Cave. Fly to Shanghai. Transfer to the 4* Sofitel Hyland Hotel. Check-in for 2 nights on a bed & breakfast basis. Rest of day at leisure.
Day 10
At leisure in Shanghai. Once dubbed the 'Paris of the East', Shanghai is a modern bustling cosmopolitan city, blending east and west, old and new. On one side of the Huangpu River is the famous Bund, where 1920's Western architecture remains as a reminder of its Colonial past. Facing this on the other side of the river the buildings are reaching for the sky in the brand new Pudong area. Not to be missed in Shanghai is the shopping on Nanjing Road, an evening amble along the Bund, the Shanghai Museum and the Jade Buddha Temple housing an exquisite 2m high white jade Buddha. The Yu Gardens are also worth a visit: founded as a private garden in 1559, but destroyed during the Opium Wars, they have been restored and are a beautiful example of a classical Chinese style garden.
Day 11
Transfer to the airport for Virgin Atlantic flight to London Heathrow. Arrive same day.
